Introducing NeoDB Family Database

One cool thing about this newer form of social media, is it works with software that serves very different purposes. social.thedevane.family is based on Mastodon which is mostly for short form text based posts, but also supports pictures and video. It’s heavily inspired by Twitter. Pixelfed is solely focused on image sharing in the style of oldschool Instagram. Peertube is for YouTube, you get the idea.

The cool thing is, you don’t need to create an account for each style of social media. People on Mastodon (that’s us!) can follow people on other platforms. It works the same way email does. You don’t need to have a Yahoo and Gmail account. They can talk to each other.

NeoDB is the open social web version of review sites like IMDB. Unlike IMDB, it lets you review more than just Movies & TV. Board Games, Video Games, Albums, and Podcasts are also options for it’s users to review.

I’ve added our own instance of NeoDB at neodb.thedevane.family

You can link your existing social.thedevane.family account, and all of your reviews will also be posted on both NeoDB, and crossposted to social.thedevane.family. You can see an example of how this works in the main timeline as I have reviewed a card game Katie and I have been playing.

I get this might be a bit confusing as this is very different than the social media we are used to, but I think it’s pretty cool and I love the idea of having a way to recommend media to each other and be able to keep a record of that info.
